The 10th Social Contribution Seminar organized by our University’s Social Affairs and Social Contribution Coordination Office was held online on February 25, 2025.

The 10th seminar series organized by our University’s ‘Social Contribution Priority Areas’ was attended by Specialist Physiotherapist Hüseyin Babayiğit as a speaker.

Hüseyin Babayiğit gave information about common spine problems, causes of spine problems and solution methods in his speech.

Babayiğit, who drew attention to the fact that every person experiences waist, neck and back pain at some point in their life, said, “Using technological devices such as phones and tablets starting in childhood and working at a desk for long periods of time can cause us to encounter these pains frequently. It can also lead to advanced spinal problems such as posture disorder, scoliosis and hunchback.”

Specialist Physician Hüseyin Babayiğit said that the density of hospital admissions with complaints of waist, neck and back pain is second only to the flu. Stating that we can examine spine-related pains in two groups as mechanical pains and neurological pains, Babayiğit said, “Mechanical pains are mostly pains caused by reasons such as stress, exposure to air currents, excessive sweating, incorrect working positions, sedentary life etc. The pain that occurs as a result of the discs between the vertebrae herniating and pressing on the nerve root is defined as neurological pain. In neurological pain, pain, weakness, loss of sensation and numbness are seen in the area where the nerve coming out of the spine goes to whichever body part.”

Hüseyin Babayiğit, who also emphasized that posture disorders, kyphosis (hunchback), lordosis and scoliosis as spine problems also cause this type of pain, touched on the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach in the treatment of these problems. Babayiğit noted that medical/medication use, physical therapy agents, exercise, orthopedic supports and surgical approaches can be applied in the treatment.

Specialist Physician Babayiğit, who recommended that the main solution methods for such problems are to eliminate the factors that cause the problem and to make a suitable sport a part of your life, concluded his speech by saying, “Remember that your posture is the mirror of your personality.”
